A Central Florida pool can turn green fast after a stretch of heavy rain. The usual suspect is algae, but green water is not automatically an algae diagnosis. Rain can add water, debris, and runoff while storms interrupt circulation. Dissolved metals can also produce green or turquoise water—sometimes right after chlorine is added.
The right first move is not to pour in a random combination of shock, algaecide, and clarifier. Keep swimmers out, make sure the pool area and equipment are safe, identify the likely cause, and test the water. Then treat what the results actually show.
Quick answer: If the pool is cloudy green and has a slippery or brushable film, algae is likely. Remove debris, verify circulation, test free chlorine, pH, and stabilizer, brush the pool, and use a label-directed algae treatment based on the pool’s actual volume and test results. If the water is clear green or became greener immediately after chlorine was added, stop guessing and test for metals or call a pool professional.
Your first 30 minutes: diagnose before you dose
This is a triage window, not a promise that the pool will be ready to swim in 30 minutes.
- Wait for safe conditions. If you can hear thunder, stay indoors. The National Weather Service says to remain in safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
- Keep everyone out of the water. Green or cloudy water can hide the floor, steps, a person in distress, or debris.
- Look for runoff and electrical hazards. Stop if there is standing water at the equipment pad, a tripped breaker, a wet control box, downed lines, or suspected sewage, septic, fertilizer, or pesticide runoff.
- Remove what you safely can. Skim leaves and twigs, then empty the skimmer basket. Shut the system off before opening a pump basket, and follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
- Collect a water sample. Test before adding more products. At minimum, check free chlorine, pH, and cyanuric acid (CYA, or stabilizer). A fuller reading can also include combined chlorine, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness.

These clues can narrow the problem, but they are not a substitute for testing.

Why a Central Florida pool may turn green after rain
Rain itself does not create algae. A storm can create the conditions that let an existing problem show up:
- added rainwater changes the pool’s chemistry
- leaves, pollen, insects, soil, and other organic material increase the cleanup and sanitizer load
- yard or deck runoff may carry contaminants into the water
- power interruptions or clogged baskets can reduce circulation and filtration
- Central Florida heat and strong sunlight continue working against an under-sanitized pool after the clouds clear

How to recover a green pool after heavy rain
1. Remove debris before it reaches the filter
Use a leaf rake or skimmer net to remove leaves, twigs, and other material you can see. Empty baskets as needed. UF/IFAS recommends removing storm debris after the area is safe and before it decomposes and stains the pool finish.
If you cannot see the bottom, do not reach into the water for unseen objects. Keep swimmers out and consider professional cleanup.
2. Inspect circulation and filtration
Only operate the system if the equipment area is dry and there is no sign of storm or electrical damage. Check for normal return flow, unusual noise, air in the pump basket, leaks, and a pressure reading that makes sense for your filter.
During recovery, the filter may load up faster than usual. Clean or backwash it according to its manufacturer’s instructions and its pressure guidance. Never open a pressurized filter.
3. Test before choosing a treatment
Start with free chlorine, pH, and CYA. Do not use water color, a salt-system display, or a single strip pad as proof that the pool is sanitized.
The CDC recommends routinely testing chlorine and pH. Its residential-pool guidance lists a pH range of 7.0–7.8 and minimum chlorine concentrations of 1 ppm in pools without CYA and 2 ppm in pools using CYA. Those are public-health minimums for routine operation—not a universal green-pool treatment dose. 4. Correct pH and sanitizer from measured results
Follow the chemical manufacturer’s label, calculate the dose from the pool’s actual volume, and account for the measured CYA level. Add products separately as directed. Never mix pool chemicals with one another, combine products in the same container, or add an automatic weather-based dose without testing.

5. Brush the entire pool
Brush walls, steps, benches, ladders, corners, and the floor with a brush approved for the pool surface. Brushing loosens attached growth and gives circulation and treatment better access to it. Pay extra attention to low-circulation areas, behind ladders, and around steps.
6. Filter, clean, and retest
Keep circulation and filtration working as directed for the recovery, provided the equipment is safe. Monitor the filter, remove newly collected debris, and retest on the schedule required by the test kit and treatment label. Vacuum settled material using the method appropriate for the system.
If backwashing or lowering the water level sends water off the property, check the local rules first. The EPA warns that pool water containing chlorine, bromine, or salt can harm waterways and that local discharge requirements vary. Do not send chemically treated water into a street, storm drain, pond, lake, or wetland.
7. Use a clear definition of done
The pool is not recovered merely because the green color faded. Wait until all of these are true:
- the water is clear enough to see the entire bottom and main drain
- no visible algae remains on the walls, steps, or floor
- free chlorine and pH are back in the appropriate operating range
- the readings remain stable after retesting
- circulation and filter pressure are normal for the system
- there is no unresolved runoff, electrical, or equipment concern
Appearance alone is not swimming-safety clearance.
What not to add first
A green pool is not a shopping list. Before buying several products, avoid these common mistakes:
- Do not assume every green pool needs shock. Clear green water may be a metals problem, and more oxidizer can deepen the discoloration.
- Do not lead with clarifier. Clarifier does not replace sanitizer, brushing, debris removal, or a working filter.
- Do not add a copper-based algaecide without diagnosing the water. Copper can contribute to green or turquoise discoloration and staining.
- Do not mix chemicals. Keep products in their original containers and follow every label’s handling and spacing directions.
- Do not drain the pool as a routine fix. A high groundwater table and saturated soil can create structural risks. Get professional advice before a major drain.

Stop the DIY recovery and call for help when:
- standing water reached the pump, controls, heater, lighting system, or electrical panel
- the water may contain sewage, septic overflow, fertilizer, pesticide, fuel, or another unknown contaminant
